As we referenced in our post yesterday about DC Universe Online's concept art, the folks at SOE Austin are looking to change the playing field fairly substantially with their superhero MMO title. In fact, in a number of ways they're looking to re-examine a lot of the basic elements we think of as part and parcel with the MMO package. One great example is the concept of questing. Your average experience in a massively multiplayer game right now involves seeking out quests - essentially 'todo lists' - from characters a story-centric quest hub somewhere in the game world. In DCUO, the goal is to...Continue reading Massively in Metropolis: DC Universe Online goes beyond questing

The new Day Jobs feature coming with City of Heroes Issue 13: Power and Responsibility has caught the imagination of many of the roleplaying crew, but some other players are unsure what to make of it. Designer Phil Zeleski has provided some insight into how the feature works and what sorts of rewards players can get from using it.Put simply, the CoX Day Job system allows players to log out from a specific location (like a hospital or vault) and when they return to play, after an extended log out period, they will gain a temporary power or some other benefit. With the exception of badges and...Continue reading The other side of the cape: designing Day Jobs in CoX

City of Heroes Issue 13: Power and Responsibility has now been patched to the Test Server, where a small but dedicated group of people will be testing the hell out of it for a while before the gate is unlocked and Open Beta begins. Leaking stuff from a Closed Beta is of course a major no-no, and we would not condone this from anyone. There is, however, a limited amount of access that anyone can get, simply by going through character creation. Although it's not possible to enter the game fully unless you're in the Closed Beta, costume pieces and new powersets can be examined in their current...Continue reading City of Heroes Issue 13 enters Closed Beta

I have to admit -- I've played Geometry Wars on the 360 -- it was the first game I bought from the Xbox Live Arcade. I love it -- Its a high powered shooter with Asteroids style movement in a closed environment -- somewhat larger than your screen, with an endless barrage of different items coming at you. I saw that they were releasing the game for the DS and Wii, but really panned it. The DS is good, but how good could THAT game be put onto the DS? So despite being tempted several times, I left… Continue

Looks like City may FINALLY have some competition. This looks a lot further along than I would have thought.

Sorry I didn't get back to you, holidays and work have kept me busy.
Yeah I still play CoH now and then with a group I met in CoV Beta, we do Team Speak while we play and have many lvl 50-30ish heroes on Justice, same with villains on Guardian with a mix of the opposite on each too now. We have all started a new bunch of heroes on Infinity to try out the new power sets mostly they range for the teens to around 30. Let me know if you would like to join us some time.
Since the game wasn't designed from the ground up for PvP, you may be right -- CoV was an afterthought after all, based on Player demand. In comics the villains are rarely as coordinated and work as a team as they tend to in CoV.
I'd ask about your blog, but I don't know a thing about CoH/CoV.
