CCP unbans old forum posters to combat goonspam?

How far does the Meta game go?

From reading the CAOD (Corporation, Alliance, and Organization Forum) on EVE-Online's Website, it appears as if CCP has been unbanning old time posters. Previously, the system for forum ban's made it almost inevitable that long-time, constant posters would end up banned, due the system of steadily increasing penalities, which ended with an apparently life-time ban. Why is this unbanning news? Read on.

As a result of this system, many long time posters went to a 3rd party forum, Scrapheap Challenge. However popular that forum became though, it would always be 2nd fiddle to EVE-O. However, lately we have seen GoonSwam (love them or hate them) take the forums in a new direction. Thread after thread reading like a 'joke' from Something Awful's front page. Now, were these unbannings of 'veteran' and 'respected' posters an attempt by CCP to bring back some of the old feel to the forums? Or just a coincidence?

Now, I am no fan of BoB, and I know the meta game aspect of EVE is a vital and important part, but how far is to far? Do you think CCP are right to 'step in' at this type of Meta gaming? Or does it go beyond Meta gaming and hurt the game itself enough to warrant this?

It could be just killing two birds with one stone.

Un-doing the bannanation (yes, word!), as well as trying to counter-act the goonish plague.

Hell if I know... perhaps if we had some CCP employees on the site *cough* they could add some insight.

Meta gaming is doing things outside of a game to gain an advantage. IE, infiltrating another corp's forums, and vent.

Or doing things like having an alliance leader order the alliance to spam the game's forums for some purpose.

Also, this can be seen in things like WoW's trading card game, where people will goto tourny's sometimes with a deck designed to take out a 'popular' deck they expect many people to have.

Not part of the game itself, like a card, or in-game money, but something outside of it that lends an advantage to you.

Look mummie Tinfoil Hattery at it's finest.

You answer the why yourself. Long time regular posters getting a lifetime ban. Apparently they no longer want to silence their paying costumers for the rest of their lives. Just in 6 month chunks each time they break the rules. Also previous permabans start at 6 month bans.

Also lets add link to the devblog that explains this change. Hmm, any way to make this a nice link in a comment?

In short, CCP admits (somewhere between the lines) that the current state of the forum is a bit shit. Beter moderating is needed than a group of volunteers can provide. Rules change a bit and new shiny-ness will be added.

And SHC wasn't founded as an outlet for banned eve o people, but as a place to gather ship setups, mostly Minmater I believe.

Tinfoil it maybe, but more then a few things dismissed by the predictable snarky tinfoil comment have turned out to be true.

Also, not to nitpick but I didn't say it was founded as an outlet, but that people did turn there as a result of the bans.
