Wow... suddenly the world's a lot less funny.

Carlin was one of the first comedians I ever listened to. I had all his albums in high school, and even his most recent stand-up was hilarious. Gonna have to drag out all the old CD's and have a listening marathon tomorrow.

In closing: Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits. Here's to all the laughs.

So sad. :(

I'll always remember and thank him for coining the term "cluster fuck".

You're right. You're pretty damned likely to be flamed. Because that comment will likely only be taken one of two ways.

1. You think he's so fucking old he should have died a while ago. But 71 isn't that old. My grandparents lived two decades past that.

2. You think that it's about time he died just because he's him. At which point you're being an ass.

I suppose there could be some third reason that is unclear to me, and if that is the case, you probably should have added that to your post. However, it seems doubtful you were going for any kind of true clarity there as starting out your comment with "I'll get flamed for this, but..." indicates that you might be posting for the reaction alone.

As it stands, there are a lot of people who loved Mr. Carlin for making them laugh and they're going to miss him greatly. Some of those people are posting here to honor him and I doubt jumping in just to make that comment will gain their appreciation.

That's the problem with being Christian. The idea of the whole belief is to try to learn from Christ and follow his example. From all accounts the man wasn't the type to wish death on another because he offended him or crossed some line drawn in his mind. Instead, he would still love the man and forgive him. That is what we're all taught about Christ, is it not?

So then doesn't your earlier comment indicating gladness or at least relief at the man's death seem contrary to the teachings of Christ that you as a Christian should follow?

Don't get me wrong... I can obviously see where the man would have offended you. But as you said before. Nobody is perfect. And perhaps you should consider extending this thought to Carlin as well.

Obviously he was not perfect. But he was a far cry from being a murder, rapist, child abuser, or any other number of truly evil things. He was a comedian. Yes.. He said things that offended people. Yes, it's sometimes surprising to hear vulgarity coming out of an older person's mouth. (Betty White at William Shatner's Comedy Central roast comes to mind.) But honestly, he wasn't the worst society has to offer. Not by a longshot.

Matt - I don't care if you didn't like him, this thread is for those who did . . . so go back to drooling over your GAX girls or whatever endevours your quasi Christian beliefs allow and have some freaking respect for the dead and others grief.

I agree with Q. I hesitate to say this because I don't feel the eulogy for a man like George Carlin, who will be dearly missed, is a place for a flame war about religion. However, I was raised Christian as well, and one thing I always thought we preached was tolerance, mercy, and forgiveness. Seems to me people get pretty damn angry whenever someone 'violates' a Christian tenet, and usually their response is equally in violation of those same tenets they seem to hold in such high esteem. It's ok to feel offended, it's ok to disapprove, in Carlin's case it's even expected... but saying something so hurtful in the wake of a man's death... that's just cruel. I understand though. I'm Christian. I forgive you.

Fair enough, but post that opinion in your own blog, so people who come to pay respects to the man don't have to see how happy someone is that their 'vulgarity' is gone.

Hey man, it's understandable. Everyone's got opinions and emotions. Just the fact that you've acknowledged what you have signals to me that you're not a totall asshat :) It'll blow over, bro.
