GAX Online - The Xbox Playstation Wii MMORPG PC Social Network

Ok. I have seen the adds, i have talked to the people who play it, and i have viewed some screed shots. But what the heck is EVE really about? I mean i have talked to people who used to play the game in the chat section of this website, but they can't even give me a straight up answer. I would also like to know is there is a difference between EVE and EVE Trinity, or if Trinity is a version or different world or something. If anyone has the answer to my questions i would appreciate you posting them HERE! Gary and Ryan if you guys are reading this right now please do a review for me on MOG that would be fantastic! Please give me some details about the game or maybe even some vids in the game that i could see. Thanks in advance-

Bro, it's internet spaceships with spread sheets. And there is only one version and only one server which is actually a really great aspect of the game. Why don't you play the trial that is linked in the top left on the front page of GAX? It can be a very fun game if you find the right people/corp to play with.

Also try using the search feature on this site, there are countless blogs and articles discussing the game. Also might want to listen to the first couple episodes of "The Drone Bay" on the virginworlds collective site if you need some info and help starting out.

"What is EVE" is a pretty hard question TBH, saying "Its a MMO" while technically true, is only scratching the surface. Saying "Its a game about internet spaceships" makes it sound pretty sad TBH. Saying "Its the game which has addicted me for over 5 years" makes me sound pretty sad. At the end of the day its basically an MMORPG but bigger.........

Trinity is the name of the final part of the kali expansion which came out in 2007. It has since been superseded by the Empyrean Age expansion which came out last tuesday. All expansions in EVE are free (with everyone on the same server, everyone has to be playing the same game). Just download the latest client from the website and you will be sorted.

Rather confusingly Trinity is also the name of EVE's graphics engine - There are two flavours of this, the classic version or the enhanced version. check the requirements on it to deceide which to use. You will still be playing the same game in the same server which ever one you choose, its just one looks sexier!

I hope this helps

Eve is basically a game where the player economy and the galactic sovereignty is in total control of the player and player alliances/corps. Now that means when you start a new character, you are a speck-sized fish in a gigantic pond. Another difference is that leveling up is time, not time-commitment, based. You select the skill you want to learn, and you forget about it. After awhile, the skill levels up, then you pick the next one. This design choice introduces one of the main issues new players, used to grind-based mmos, have with the game: you have to commit to goals outside of leveling up your character in order to feel like you're doing something. When you start off, your options are limited: do missions or mine. But there's a third option: find a corp. There are corporations willing to pick up and train new characters. And despite contrary belief, low skill-point players in frigates can help a corp. Also, you don't have to fight. You can be an industrialist and gain resources for corps as well as learn how to build every ship in the game. This will take time...but the plus is you don't have to take time away from money making endeavors in order to skill up. Here's another thing to note, EVE's story is very complex...but it's not your story. You make up what your story is...or what you want it to be. These choices depend on your corp, what you fly, how you fly it, if you're a fighter, and industrialist, etc.

From my own personal experience, EVE is a game that really stresses experimentation. You're going to make a lot of mistakes, you're going to die (a lot), and it's going to be frustrating, but it's unlike any other mmo on the market for one big reason: a feeling that on any day in EVE, anything is possible. An alliance could be totally wiped out in a gigantic war, the economy could collapse from over-inflation of certain goods, trade routes can be attacked by rats, and that aspect of it: that none of it is scripted, is what makes EVE so interesting.

Trinity is a recently released expansion that added (among other things) a very extensive graphical overhaul to the EVE engine, which hadn't really been upgraded since the game was released. Empyrean Age is the most recent expansion, which was released to help new players get involved in PVP by allowing them to join militias that actively target players of enemy factions.

EVE is not going to make any sense from watching a few videos. I hate to phrase it this way, but EVE is a game that only makes sense after diving in head first, drowning for a few seconds, then teaching yourself how to tread water. You're going to feel lost...I did when I first tried it. But it has the potential to be a very rewarding gaming experience.

I hope you give it a shot. Look me up if you do.

Oh btw, hardcore EVE players will pride themselves on the so called "learning curve" of EVE and make claims that only the best understand the game and are able to play it. It's bull shit, if you are used to traditional western style mmos (WoW, everquest 2) where your movement is controlled by W, A, S, D, then EVE will be a little unfamiliar to you at first.

However the truth is that the controls for the game are really simple and extremely dumbed down, controlling your ship is all done with the mouse and the activation of weapons/equipment are done with the "F" keys. Targeting is done by clicking with the mouse in the "Overview Window" and that is basically it control wise.

The challenging part of EVE is in theory crafting, researching ship load outs or creating your own (personal fav). If you understand basic mathematics and have even the slightest grip on basic finances then you should be "ok" with the market interface so that you can buy new ships/equipment and fit it while minding power grid and cpu usage.

WARNING: This game is a boring sleep-fest if you attempt to solo after you get your first cruiser. And DO the ENTIRE tutorial, it is long but very worth it for new players.

If you want to get a taste of what Eve has to offer quickly, download the trial, follow Van Hemlock's advice on how to get 0.5 faction standing and look for a corporation that participate in the newly release faction warfare for your chosen race (gallente and caldari are the most active right now), pick one that replaces frigates for free and you're set.
