Was it me or did that Champions Online trailer suck

Ok, so you all saw the Champions Online trailer and thought it sucked.

Right.

And I had plenty of people ripping DC Universe Online because it was going to be ACTION first and MMO second. So who still thinks that is a stupid way to make a superhero game?

We will see won't we? To me Champions Online looked like a re-skinned City of Heroes. No thanks, that is NOT A HERO GAME. I am not saying that DC Universe Online will save the genre, but it is a step in the right direction. If a Producer of the game sits down in a interview and says WE WANT ACTION first in a superhero game, guess what!? I am going to listen and pay attention. That should be the FIRST key element you work on, from that base you work up to other things.

Here is the trailer for Champions Online, you be the judge and tell me what you think:

Yawn. C'mon people you can do better than that for a trailer!

I am not sure "suck" is the right word. Did the trailer make me excited about the game? No, but that does not mean it will not be a good game, it just means they need to work on their presentation of the game to players. Sometimes I think we as players expect too much and when we do not get it than we think everything about it just sucks.

Was that a trailer or a game play demo?

It did seem kind of plasticicky. I have to agree with the re-skin of City of Heroes. While a decent game in itself it needs a ton of help to compete with the newer games.

I think making the graphics cartoony may not be an entirely bad thing, instead of shooting for the realism of something like Conan, they would be a bit more timeless and could keep the game looking (for the want of a better word) good, hey its working for WoW. But then again if the game sucks then it sucks.

While I'm not as psyched about Champions as I used to be, I think its a bit far out to say its a re-skinned version of CoX. The Archvillian system alone is enough to make it a far far more super heroey feeling game than CoX. Which, DC online, doesn't have.

DC Online, on the other hand, does have interactive physical objects in the environment, which should be one of the main focuses in any super hero game. You never see a single comic book fight in which the enviroment is not used to bash the other person. So that is a definate score for DC. And the fact that you get to fight alongside DC heroes is pretty awesome.

One big biG bIG BIG, problem I'm having with the DC Online footage is the fact that so far every single Player Character I've seen is dressed in a one piece unitard. So far its looking like the only character customization is the pattern and color scheme on your tights. That is a big no-no in any MMO but especially in a super hero game. That was always one of the best things about CoX, the thing that made it unique from any other game out there, was that you could make whatever costume you wanted from the get-go which created the unique MMO situation in which people would actually complement you on the design asthetic of your character, and lead to wildly diverse looking player population. Without that, I'd almost rather have a single player game than an MMO where everyone looks the same except for the NPCs.

I was not impressed, but it's probably unfair to call it a 'trailer'.
