A ding world: Another completion ding

A bit over two months ago I reched one long term goal I had in City of Villains, to get the pets for all dominator control powersets. A few weeks later Issue 12 happened and there was another dominator pet suddenly to pick up. Yesterday I reached my pet goal again, by obtaining the Animated Stone pet from the Earth Control powerset.

A nice little fellow, although a bit eager to run into battle and get himself killed at times.

Another ding happened also, my sonic/dark corruptor got another level. The only thing a bit special here was that I have not leveled this character for a year or so. But thanks to the combat attributes monitoring and the added power details that can be shown since Issue 12 I have a better view of the various abilities and this also changed my gameplay a bit for the better.

I also had a better insight in how I could rearrange my enhancement slots a bit, which in itself makes a nice gameplay element and also later hopefully even better gameplay in combat in general.

Massively: New City of Heroes fanzine launched

City of Heroes community relations manager Alex 'Lighthouse' Von Minden doubles up as the editor for a new CoX Fanzine. The current issue is technically Issue 1, the former 'Issue 0' having been released as a preview issue, reproducing material from the Fan Submissions section of the Top Cow comic.

Issue 1 features a spectacular cover by Douglas Shuler, with Back Alley Brawler and Ghost Widow apparently on the same side for once. The background of Cimeroran soldiers can only mean they're among the many Heroes and Villains who've chosen to set aside their differences for long enough to help Imperious make the future safe. Ghost Widow's not looking too shabby for someone who's been dead at least three years, as Back Alley Brawler (the developer) would have liked to affirm.

Massively: The changes happening at Cryptic

Cryptic Studios was the developer to bring us a superhero MMO with City of Heroes. Since that time thousands of people have spent a lot of time both creating and playing their fantasized superheroes over the past years, including us here at Massively. Essentially, we've always felt like Cryptic games were pretty damn good. Recently, Jack Emmert made a post sharing with the community how the Champions Online team stopped development of new content for two weeks in order to thoroughly play and polish a single zone.

Is this a sign of things to come from Cryptic? We certainly hope so, because with three titles in development -- Star Trek Online being a strongly-rumored guess for one of them -- there's already quite a lot that's different about the guys that brought us City of Heroes back in 2004 these days.

Massively: Hints keep coming for future content in CoX

It's a month and a half since City of Heroes Issue 12: Midnight Hour went live, and by now the developers will have been hard at work on Issue 13 for some time. While there has been little in the way of concrete information, over time the Developers have given out a multitude of hints and comments that have enabled us to put together a speculative look at some of the coming content. As we'll see, there's been a lot more hinted at concerning powers and game systems than new mission content or zones.

The safest bet for Issue 13 is the introduction of the Shields powerset, which Back Alley Brawler has described at length: 'Shields will be a defensive powerset, not an AT. They'll also be useable with any unarmed or right handed weapon powerset... because Shields require their own combat mode animations, they have to work with every attack power, every buff, debuff, hit reaction, pool power, ancillary power, and patron power that might be used while holding a shield out in front of you. So the bulk of work on Shields is just all the animations.' The bulk of those animations were completed with Issue 12, as many of the Cimeroran NPCs use shields. Since the NPC hero Blue Steel is famous for his shield, we'd be surprised not to see him play an active part in the game at last.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies for DS

I have to admit -- I've played Geometry Wars on the 360 -- it was the first game I bought from the Xbox Live Arcade. I love it -- Its a high powered shooter with Asteroids style movement in a closed environment -- somewhat larger than your screen, with an endless barrage of different items coming at you. I saw that they were releasing the game for the DS and Wii, but really panned it. The DS is good, but how good could THAT game be put onto the DS? So despite being tempted several times, I left… Continue

Champions Video

Looks like City may FINALLY have some competition. This looks a lot further along than I would have thought.

Hey,
Sorry I didn't get back to you, holidays and work have kept me busy.
Yeah I still play CoH now and then with a group I met in CoV Beta, we do Team Speak while we play and have many lvl 50-30ish heroes on Justice, same with villains on Guardian with a mix of the opposite on each too now. We have all started a new bunch of heroes on Infinity to try out the new power sets mostly they range for the teens to around 30. Let me know if you would like to join us some time.

Not too much anymore - I play with a group of friends each Wednesday night, currently knocking around with some villains on Victory once a week :) I kind of expect one of the guys to get bored soon and ask us to move on to another game, but they might surprise me and hang with CoV.

I've always been more of a PvE than a PvP player myself. I don't visit Siren's Call or Bloody Bay EXCEPT for the exploration and mission badges.

Since the game wasn't designed from the ground up for PvP, you may be right -- CoV was an afterthought after all, based on Player demand. In comics the villains are rarely as coordinated and work as a team as they tend to in CoV.

I really liked City of Heroes but once you try to do the PvP thing you see the glaring weaknesses of the game. I used to sub off and on for the last 2 years but the fact that villains were left out in the cold annoyed me.

Welcome to Gax Nexus! Any questions about the site?

I'd ask about your blog, but I don't know a thing about CoH/CoV.
